My submission to the Who Needs Feminism blog.
As an aspiring writer, I can only say that these two authors have set a sickening example for today’s young girls and women by glorifying abusive relationships and portraying them as ‘romantic’. Fans jump to their feet the second they hear anything against them, even having the audacity of calling respected writers like JK Rowling ‘sexist’. ‘Sexist’? Really, now? Well, here’s a penny for your thoughts: Molly Weasley raised six children, five of them boys, and even with her husband occupying a position for the Ministry of Magic, she was still the Head of the House. Remember what she said to Bellatrix? “Notmydaughter, youbitch!” And then she made Bellatrix EXPLODE. That’s what happens when you fuck with Molly Weasley.
When I grow up, I want my literary works to inspire girls and women to be strong, independant and to never lower their standards for any man who comes off as mysterious and dangerous. Love is not keeping tabs on each other, hurting your partner for your enjoyment, wrecking the engine of her car (that shit’s expensive to fix!) or watching them sleep. You do not love someone if you are hurting them. If you walk into a dangerous situation, there’s a good chance you’re not going to be saved by a sparkly leech. More than likely, it’ll be a good samaritan or a police officer at best. Jumping off a cliff does not mean that your ex who you weresoin love with will come to rescue you from drowning. Breakups hurt, yes, but putting yourself in danger is not therapy. It’ssuicide, and it solves nothing.
Do not say ‘at least people are reading something’, that’s bullshit and you know it. People are reading bullshit that is making the general female populace look bad. We need female writers and female characters that are strong-willed and are of all shapes, colours and sizes to set a better example for the women of the future. Women deserve as much respect as everyone else on the planet in any situation, be it fictional or in real-life.
